Upholstered Furniture with a History – Family Business Since 1922

The Barnickel upholstered furniture manufacturer was founded in Niederwürschnitz, Saxony, in 1922. Since then, our company has remained closely connected with the Barnickel family and the upholstery craft.

Shortly before the construction of the Berlin Wall, Walter Barnickel moved the company to West Berlin in 1960. At the end of the 1960s it relocated to Holtrup, and in 1972 the Barnickel family built a new production facility at our present site in Vlotho-Exter.

After completing his master craftsman qualification, Bernd Barnickel joined the family business in 1973. In 1994 he took over the company completely from his father.

In the same year, a new finished-goods warehouse and an additional storage building further expanded production capacity and flexibility.

Tobias Barnickel has also worked in the company since 2005. Like his father, grandfather and great-grandfather before him, he is rooted in the interior-decoration and upholstery trade and completed his master craftsman qualification in 2004.

More than a century of company history also means change. Our historic photographs recall different stages in the development of Barnickel as an upholstered-furniture manufacturer.

What began in 1922 continues today as a family business. We combine our experience in upholstery craftsmanship with individual design options, distinctive fabrics and colours, and the manufacture of our furniture in Germany.

For us, a Barnickel piece should be more than simply furniture. It should suit the people and spaces it is made for – personal, individual and created with a genuine passion for craftsmanship.
